Project: WPRB 2012 [concluded]

Population Issues in the Netherlands

The aim of this periodic study is to inform stakeholders in the policy debate in the Netherlands about recent demographic trends, their multiple social impacts and potential policy implications. In this ongoing study NIDI heads the Working Group for Periodic Reporting on Population Issues (WPRB). The WPRB consortium is led by NIDI and further consists of the leading national planning agencies including the Social and Cultural Planning Office of the Netherlands (SCP), the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) as well as Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Also observers from various government departments take part in WPRB. WPRB reports every three years on demographic trends and policy implications. Each report focuses on a particular population issue which is selected for its policy relevance and its timeliness. WPRB studies consist of three parts. The first section describes demographic trends in the Netherlands against the backdrop of developments at a European and global level. The second section highlights a particular population issue which is analyzed from different perspectives (economic, socio-cultural, environmental and planning) while the third part summarises and integrates the main findings of the study.

The most recent (2012) report was dedicated to the issue of active ageing. In the context of current demographic change, the challenges of population ageing become more daunting, and the need to make the best use of the rich resources of an older population becomes more urgent. Active ageing includes but is not restricted to higher participation on the labour market; it also includes tapping the resources of intergenerational and social networks and civic activities including volunteering and other types of social participation of senior citizens. The 2012 WPRB report marks the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.
