Project

Working after (early) retirement - Determinants and consequences of bridge employment

The Netherlands witnesses a new development on the labor market. Increasing numbers of retirees reenter the labor force after (early) retirement from their main career jobs. This project will study the determinants and consequences of this phenomenon, called bridge employment, from an interdisciplinary point of view. One of the goals is to investigate the influence of the opportunities and restrictions older adults face in their opportunity structure (resources), in their social context, and in their socio-psychological disposition on their post-retirement work behaviors. In addition, we investigate the impact of bridge employment on late life outcomes, such as well-being and social integration of older adults. The project will use data from a three wave multi-actor panel study covering the period 2001-2011 in which around 1,500 older workers (aged 50-64 at wave 1) and their spouses are followed during the transition from work to retirement.
