Hans Clevers, President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and Sibrand Poppema, President of the Board of the University of Groningen (RUG), met in The Hague Wednesday morning March 19 to ratify the decision to fund the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI).

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of the various ministries, KNAW, the University of Groningen and NIDI. Sibrand Poppema also unveiled the new nameplate on the institute’s façade.

This collaboration between the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the University of Groningen will enable NIDI to continue its research at the current level. In May last year, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science announced it was going to stop funding demographic research. KNAW and the University of Groningen then decided to shoulder the funding responsibilities for this important knowledge institute.
